Those who haven’t been to Toledo in a while may still think of it as an old Midwestern industrial center. But roll into Toledo again and you’ll see how things have changed.
The Toledo of today is a lively city that welcomes visitors with a spectacular array of things to do and see. Set on the banks of the mighty Maumee River, Toledo is located at the northern edge of Ohio, and flanked on its east side by beautiful Lake Erie.
With Interstates 75, 475, 80, 90, and 280 all running right through town, Toledo is a central stopover that’s easy to reach from just about anywhere.
Toledo has gained a reputation as a real “turn around” town. There’s a newly revitalized downtown that’s brimming with trendy restaurants. And there’s a growing assortment of brewpubs, ready to welcome those visitors who are staying in town or may have parked their rigs for the day at one of the many campgrounds near Toledo.
The beer scene in the Toledo region is flourishing with several new breweries hitting the town this past year making northwest Ohio a true craft beer destination. Maumee Bay Brewing Company located downtown, is the anchor that kicked off the craft beer culture in Toledo.
Opening in 2015, Black Cloister Brewing Company has quickly found its niche in downtown Toledo with it “Brew Good, Do Good” attitude and a great variety of styles. New to the scene are Inside the Five and Patron Saints Brewery. Other favorites include Earnest Brew Works, Black Frog Brewery, Great Black Swamp Brewing Company and many more. Toledo’s cultural scene is thriving too. The world-renowned Toledo Museum of Art is equally treasured by locals and visitors alike. The Museum, along with the award-winning Glass Pavilion – housing an extensive collection of glass art – are set on a 36-acre campus, overlooking the historic Old West End commonly referred to as the OWE.
A match made in heaven considering the OWE is perhaps best known as one of the country’s largest standing collection of late Victorian homes. Spreading across 25 city blocks, you will find iconic architecture styles ranging from Colonial, Georgian, Italian Renaissance, Queen Ann and more all dotting the streets.
There’s also plenty of hotels near Toledo’s Old West End that’ll meet any budget.
This is a new destination for an old location if you will… and along with its urban appeal, Toledo has plenty of green spaces.
Out at Maumee Bay State Park there’s so much to do it’s a destination in and of itself. According to locals this park started off as a farm and was transformed into a beautiful lakeside nature preserve complete with: a 256 site campground and lodge, fishing, golf, rustic cabins and a conservatory… all set along two miles of stunning Lake Erie beaches.
Detroit to Toledo is less than an hour on the I75; while Cleveland to Toledo via the I90 is less than 2 hours and takes you past some great Lake Erie towns like Put-in Bay and Sandusky. Windsor, Ontario is the closest Canadian border crossing and it’s just over an hour from Toledo also on the I75.
